Stamp Connect: Azure Window

Standard

Azure Window was a 92 feet natural limestone arch, located in Gozo island of Malta at the Dwejra Bay. It is also called as Dwejra Window. It was one of the most popular tourist spot on the Gozo island in Malta.

The Azure Window was believed to have been formed due to the collapse of two sea caves. And ironically, the natural arch got collapsed when huge waves dashed over it due to a storm on the morning of 8 March 2017. Watch the live footage of the collapse of the Azure Window.

The iconic structure has been part of some movies and TV serials. In the first episode of the popular Game of Thrones TV series, the Azure Window is shown in the background in the Dothraki-Daenerys wedding scene.

On 19 October 2010, Malta Post had issued a stamp on the Azure Window as part of the “Treasure of Malta” series.

Since the 1980s, parts of the top slab of the arch have been collapsing in small pieces. Even in the recent past in November 2016, there were reports of rock pieces falling off from the arch after a cliff jumper dived from there.

The news of the collapse came as a rude shock to me. It was one of the places that I wanted to see when I visit Malta. Now it is gone forever!
